This is why we always recommend to keep splurge items as timeless and classic as possible. Highlighting the historic elements of your space and adding elements to complements those is a great way to invest in a timeless look.

A set of comfortable leather club chairs are never going to look dated in a study or den. It’s worth spending a bit more on those and finding bargains on a few currently trending accessories that can be inexpensively replaced when they’re no longer trendy.

Where to Save in Interior Design

The simple answer is look at the focal point in the room – that is where you want to splurge. The details in the background are the spaces you can save. If the lighting fixture is the piece, then the side tables don’t need to tie the room together. If you don’t want a showstopping Oriental Rug that was handmade in the 70’s, you can get something a lot more affordable that compliments the room’s real showstopper.
