…a house is not a home until you love where you live…

Does Your Residential Architecture Firm Need to have an Identifiable Style?

You’re finally ready to pull the trigger on that home design project, and now it’s time to choose an architect. Since you already have a preferred style, it seems logical to choose an architecture firm that specializes in that specific style.

After a bit of research, you find a firm with a portfolio that’s exclusively dedicated to the kind of style you have in mind.

Does this automatically mean they’re the best choice?

It’s always fun to choose a firm whose projects evoke a certain je ne sais quois for what you’re looking to accomplish. However, this should not be the main deciding factor when choosing the right firm for you.

Why You Shouldn’t Prioritize an Architect’s Style

When you find an architecture firm that specializes in a very specific style, it may signify that the firm does not prefer to deviate from that style. Basically, they tell their clients what they’re good at, what kind of design elements they usually use, and then the client has to choose if this is exactly what they want or not.

The client does not give as much input on the design as they would like, nor is there any room for adjustments (i.e. “Can we use X instead of Y?”) or individuality. The project will simply look just like all the others in the firm’s portfolio.

What to Really Look for in an Architecture Firm

If you have a vision for your design project, the right firm for you should not be bound to a specific style. Say you are looking for a Mediterranean Revival or a Frank Lloyd Wright style home. A firm that specializes in a style like that will say, “We’re the experts at that. We’ll get it done,” and then go to work. An architecture firm that is not beholden to a specific style will be much more flexible and collaborative as they understand that every client has their own needs and circumstances.

Instead, the right architecture firm for your project will ask you what styles you like – and why you like them. They’ll process the what and the why, rather than just the what, and the priority will be to bring your unique vision to life, as opposed to just doing the same thing over and over again.

How can you tell if a firm checks these boxes? One way is to explore how the firm approaches relationships with clients. Consistent collaboration from day one is vital for gaining a clear picture of a client’s vision along with their stylistic preferences and overall taste.

To ensure the client’s needs are still being prioritized during the construction phase, some architecture firms stay closely involved as an owner’s representative. This is a stark difference from the industry norm – of leaving clients on their own once permits are secured.

In terms of flexibility, you might explore the firm’s history of working with different-sized budgets or different types of spaces. A firm with a very specific style might have trouble adapting to a lower budget or a smaller space with more restrictions.

Don’t Limit Yourself to Rigid Framework

The point is, you don’t want to work with a one-trick pony, or someone who designs according to their taste, not your own. Instead of an identifiable style, the main deciding factor should be the firm’s capacity to understand the needs of its clients through consistent collaboration.
