The Art of Nooks: Designing Cozy Corners for Relaxation in Your Home

In today’s super-busy culture, it can be difficult to find time throughout the week to relax. That’s why rest corners can be so helpful. This area of your home is for relaxation only, so it should be designed to facilitate relaxing activities like meditating, journaling, or reading. It’s also important to make sure your rest corner stands out in its relaxation capabilities, making it look particularly calming in comparison to the rest of your home.

With this in mind, here are a few tips for designing the ultimate rest corner:

Define the Space

Since your rest corner will be located in a corner of a room – as opposed to having its own room – it’s important to define the space. Laying down a small rug is a great way to not only add definition, but also give the space a strong sense of warmth and comfort. You can accomplish this with almost any style of rug, but if it fits in your space, a Persian-style rug can do a wonderful job delineating the corner from the rest of the room.

Prioritize Comfort

A rest corner is supposed to be comfortable. Many homeowners associate comfort with design elements that offer plush seating, like a soft armchair, a bean bag, or a window seat cushion. Another staple of rest corner is a thick, knitted blanket accompanied by a few throw pillows.

The key is choosing furniture that’s made from a particularly soft fabric, something like velvet or polished cotton. The softness of these elements creates an inviting appeal that distinguishes your rest corner from other parts of your home.

Use Neutral Colors

Neutral colors remain a popular choice for homeowners, largely because they support a calming aesthetic. Rest corners give you an opportunity to take full advantage of this affect by filling your corner with soothing tones like soft blues, beiges, grays, or whites. If you don’t find light colors relaxing, darker tones can be very relaxing as well, like a rich brown or charcoal.

Here in Miami, lots of homeowners like to create a relaxing vibe by using color palettes that resemble our coastline. This includes sandy beiges and crisp whites to mimic the sand, and blues and/or greens to mimic the sea. Some people also use smaller accessories like pillows to incorporate bright, bold colors they find soothing, so don’t be afraid to choose your favorite colors over a more conventional palette.

Sufficient Light for Reading

Good lighting can add more ambiance to your rest corner. The warm glow of an adjustable table or floor lamp provides plenty of direct light without overwhelming the space. Both elements can help set the mood for a much-needed relaxation session, whether that involves reading, journaling, meditating, or yoga. Floor lamps also eliminate the need for a side table. If your rest corner is near a window, you can use white, sheer voile curtains to soften the glow of incoming natural light.
