“I already know what I want to do. I just need you to draw it up for me.” If we could count the number of times we’ve heard that line here at Debowsky Design Group, well, we’d need a whole heckuva lot more fingers.

More often than not, when people are ready to renovate or remodel their homes – they already have some frame of a design in mind before they even start to research architecture firms or general contractors.

Which is, actually, a major plus.

The downside kicks into gear when someone starts the renovation process by coming to the conclusion (see what we did there?) that their vision doesn’t need expert input in regards to the drawings needed.

There have been many times where we’ve worked with clients whose design vision has been right on point for what we would recommend. And then there have also been times where – even in this amazing vision scenario – that certain walls couldn’t be moved, support beams were in the way, the plumbing needed to stay right where it was originally. The list can go on and on.

There’s a big misconception that it really doesn’t take that much to do an architectural drawing and that one can skip most of the design process in order to save money. The verdict? This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Asking an architecture firm to just throw some drawings together from a design you’ve already made is the same as telling a doctor that you’ve already self-diagnosed and know exactly what you’re dealing with. All you need them to do is write you a few prescriptions (which, of course, you recommended), and you’ll be on your merry way. While this example might sound comical, it actually happens more than you think.

Building a home takes expertise and precision at every stage of the process. Failing to invoke the advice of professionals, and you could end up with a drawing, and an erected house that you soon discover is missing an entire roof (which is something we’ve actually witnessed).
