…a house is not a home until you love where you live…

What Color Lights You Should Have in Every Room in the House

Let there be light…in every room!

Having the right lights can not only change the entire ambiance of any room, but it can also add space, dimension, and a little pizzazz when your favorite space needs it most. While it is true that lighting choices are essential no matter the room, a piece of the lighting puzzle that is often left out is the color of the lighting.

Sure, there are soft glows, harsher, more fluorescent yellows, and cool, almost clinical blueish tones, but are there any other options? Believe it or not, there is a whole science behind what lights fit in which areas.

LIGHTING FOR LIVING SPACES

Your usual landing places in your home are the living room, family room, game room, etc. These are often considered the heart of the home and for a good reason. They are not only where you congregate with family and friends, but they are also where you spend the most time outside of your bedroom. That is why it is important that you have the right lights in these spaces. Let these spaces feel lively and welcoming with the perfect balance of ambient and task lighting.  Task lighting will give you the brightness to complete everyday duties, and ambient lighting provides the perfect mood lighting for movie nights and fun times.

Consider color temperatures between 2,200K and 3,500K. Warmer color temps for relaxation and soft white (around 3,000K) for tasks. Aim for a total brightness between 2,500-5000 lumens.

KITCHEN LIGHTING

While your living spaces are special, nothing is quite as special as the place where food resides. A high-traffic area, the kitchen should be brightly lit so that you can make culinary masterpieces.

Consider dimmable lighting as well for more romantic cooking times or moments when the kitchen is not in use.

Strive for cooler color temperatures somewhere between 3,500K and 4,000K.  And a total brightness of 4,000 to 7,000 lumens.

BEDROOM LIGHTING

The bedroom. The place of rest, relaxation, conversations, romance, and much more. It is a sacred space that can be a fortress of solitude when you need it most. However, poor lighting is the one thing that can turn this fortress into an obstacle course of disaster. Achieve a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere with the right lighting.

Try to use warmer color temperatures (around 2,200K- 2,700K) for a cozy and peaceful atmosphere. In addition, stay away from cooler/daylight color temperatures (4,000K- 6,000K) and blue light (which has been associated with disrupting your circadian rhythm and sleep patterns).

Strive for a total brightness of your entire bedroom should add up to a total of 2,000 to 4,000 lumens.
