…a house is not a home until you love where you live…

Embracing Indoor-Outdoor Living In South Florida

For years, the idea of extending our home’s footprint beyond it’s four (proverbial) walls has garnered quite a bit of steam. A Covid remnant that we know is going nowhere anytime soon. The idea of being able to push our square footage into our natural surroundings and take advantage of a more luxurious experience out of doors is still incredibly appealing – and we’re not just talking for those of us who are lucky enough to call South Florida home. The trend is big even up north in those snowy states.

But as for those of us who get to live in paradise, it’s no wonder that homeowners are getting increasingly interested in the blurred lines of indoor-outdoor living.

Blending Indoor and Outdoor Living into Your Design

A key element of indoor-outdoor living is the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Think: French doors, bold sliding glass doors or even the ever-intriguing concertina doors. It’s the open feeling the glass windows or doors provide that allows the backyard to unassumingly waltz right in…indoors, that is.

As outdoor kitchens and living areas grow in popularity, homes are now providing owners with more usable square footage to celebrate their lifestyles – whether hosting friends for a large dinner party or simply lounging under the stars.

Designed with functionality in mind, patios and decks are more connected to the rest of the home, and serve more as an extension of the interior rather than a completely separate space.

Water, Landscape and Hardscape – Oh My

When looking to get the most out of your outdoor space, we always recommend focusing on three key elements: water, landscape and hardscape.

For water, if you have the space, consider a pool. While a pricier addition on the forefront – there’s nothing better than a soothing view of a pool, a cool dip on a hot summer day, and a whole heckuva lot of private swimming when you finally don your latest bathing suit purchase – or not. We don’t judge.

If space is limited, consider a fountain. A recent project including a gorgeous two-way fountain that can be enjoyed both from the outdoor living room and privately from the primary bath.

For landscape, always bring in as much as you can. It serves as a way to immerse your experience in nature but also it’s good for reducing mental stressors and encouraging relaxation. We’re big fans of xeriscaping, so see what grows more naturally in the area when considering your best options.

And finally, hardscape – while pools and fountains do count towards hardscape, we do also recommend considering extending a patio’s footprint to encourage more usable space or a pergola. With so many options, the possibilities are limitless.
