Have you ever stopped to think about just how you use your home? It may sound like an odd question, but how do you use your home?

We all have certain personality types, as astrologically denoted to us regularly, but rather than asserting if you’re a hot-headed Aries or a cool-as-a-cucumber Cancer, we’re more curious about how you actually live in your space. 

Are you an entertainer? Are you a culinary enthusiast? Is your living room more of a formal gathering area that is barely used or is it chockful of kids’ shoes, muddy dog prints, and the occasional bowl of popcorn leftover from the night before (just us?)?

Here’s a fun challenge: think about your lifestyle and how you use your home, and then think about how you would like to use your home in a perfect setting. You bet those are two distinctively different things, too. 

Designing Your Home for You

One of the first questions we ask our clients when we initially sit down to embark upon a renovation or new build, is “how do you want to live in your space?” It’s a seemingly simple question, but it does take a bit of time to answer fully, and thoughtfully, 

One of the biggest rules in design is to design for ten years from now. It may sound strange, but it is so important because, for the most part, you plan to live in this house for a while and the truth is we are all going to continue to age in that time. 

If you have toddlers, while it may seem awesome to build low cabinets in the kids’ bathroom – we promise they won’t like doubling over just to wash their faces when they’re teens. 

Be sure to consider that things will inevitably change over time as you look to design a home that works for you and your lifestyle. 

Love to entertain? Create a kitchen with room for your family and friends to gather while you cook. An oversized island goes effortlessly from prep space to a wine-tasting evening with the perfect charcuterie spread. There’s no rule against having two ovens, so you never have to worry about your sides getting cold while your main dish finishes. For that matter, there’s no rule against putting two refrigerators side by side to hold all your groceries plus leave plenty of room to dry brine tomorrow night’s ribeyes. 

Work from home? Create an ideal private study with a library of built-ins and integrated lighting. You don’t have to smoke a pipe while you read in your oversized leather club chair, but no one could stop you if you wanted to.

If you have a busy family with active kids a mudroom decked out with dual washers and dryers might be the height of luxury. Or maybe it’s a garage converted into a full gym, that saves you time and energy of needing to drive to Equinox every day. 

The point is, if it works for your life it’s a great design.
