…a house is not a home until you love where you live…

What To Expect When You’re Expecting … To Renovate (Part 1)

So, you’re ready to renovate your home. Congratulations! This is a BIG (literally) deal. We know we are architects and designers, so this is our whole vibe, but we love a renovation project. It’s a chance for homeowners to fall in love with their home all over again and in a whole new way. What could be more exciting than that?

If you haven’t been through the process before, though, we’re sure you have questions. And a lot of them. That’s great too. We always love it most when clients come to us with a whole lot of questions about the process – because it means they are eager to be active participants and have a real vested interest in how their project will evolve.

That being said, we wanted to give you a brief overview of what you can expect throughout the process. Consider this a springboard to getting started – and who doesn’t love a few good bounces before diving into something new and exciting?

The Renovation Process for a Homeowner

At Debowsky Design Group, we look at renovations as a five-step process. Let us break that down for you:

  • Feasibility & Inspection: We build out, in detail, the scope of your project. We conduct a full on-site inspection and gather all the pertinent surveys and materials. This stage is the foundation of our entire project together.
  • Schematic Design: This is where the fun starts. You’ll see your project come to life and be able to weigh in on all the details. Want a bigger island in the kitchen? More natural light with oversized windows in the living room? How about a whole new outdoor oasis and a walk-in pantry? Let’s do it.
  • Design Development: Our architectural and interior design teams begin to finalize the plan for your project: colors, tiles, flooring, lighting, and all the hardware you can imagine.
  • Construction Documents (Permits): During this final stage of your project-build, we submit plans to the municipality and work diligently to respond and revise documents to address any permitting comments. Perhaps the most difficult and taxing stage, it is also the most important.
  • Site Observation & Advocacy: Our 5th and bonus phase, where we step in to be your site advocates. We’ll visit the site during construction to ensure everything is going as it should. And if it’s not – we’ll step in and make sure it does. Because we’ve got your back.
