The build phase of a home renovation is – not to sound cheesy – where dreams become real (ok, it sounds a little cheesy). It’s exciting and terrifying all at once, which is why it’s important to have your architect on hand during the build phase of your renovation.
At the end of the day, you have a vision for your home – and your architect is supposed to put that vision onto paper so that it can get built. It’s your general contractor’s job to build it, but your architect – or your owner’s representative if your architect doesn’t have a part to play in the build phase – is there to ensure it is done correctly to your vision.
The build phase of a renovation is when there is demolition and then construction. It’s hard and messy with hundreds if not thousands of details that need to be addressed. In regards to the build, the design phase has the main goal of clearly stipulating what you want your home to be like in a way that is constructible.
This is not always simple nor easy.
Once plans have gone through permitting, they need to be strictly adhered to. Turning a wall on paper into a real one with all of the engineering systems – with electrical, plumbing, and structural – in place and working correctly is itself difficult. Having an extra set of experienced eyes on site to review the work goes a long way to streamline the process and minimize delays.
Most architects keep to the design phase and don’t venture into the build phase of their client’s homes. At Debowsky Design Group, we stay with you through move-in.
And, to be honest, it makes sense. The build phase is hard to do, even harder to control and ensure everything is done to plan. But the reality is it’s an absolute necessity to ensure your home is everything you want it to be. A home renovation is a marathon and you can’t stop halfway through.
Whether you are starting out on the renovation process or are halfway through and looking to hire an architect to act as your representative to oversee the build phase of your renovation, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
